Finding a style.

With a story developing in scripts, we embarked on the creation of a visual style that could span all of the industry verticals. You’d never guess some of these early style comps were for the same project. We think they are great, but they weren’t quite right. Through many revisions we developed a 3D visual language with iconic representations of the key aspects of what it means to undertake a digital transformation. This includes our central control panels that abstracted the concepts to fun, sometimes playful, dials and sliders.

SKETCH

The ideas moved from rough sticky note sketches to refined drawings that we reviewed with key stake-holders.

BUILD & ANIMATE

From these refined drawings, a 3D landscape was brought to life with dozens of custom models and scenes.

TEXTURING & LIGHTING

Kory complained the whole time we did this part. And we just wanted to document it here.

Breakdown.

TIME SPENT

Once we were into full production, we were producing a new video about every 6 weeks. This explains all of our bad posture.

RENDERING

With 3 eGPUs working around the clock, we’ve guessed about 720 hours of render time.

THE TOOLS

Outside of the animators? Embarrassing amount of sticky notes, sketches in PSD + AI, modeling + animation in C4D, and textured+lighting+rendered with Octane.

C4D CRASHES

An average of 8.2 crashes per day.

STORYBOARDING

2500 cubic feet in Post-Its were used in the storyboarding phases. We feel slightly bad about this and might use them as office decor.

THE NUMBERS

288-ish Octane lights, 12 C4D files/project, approximately 57 taco stand burritos consumed, and an unknown number of polygons.
